Built during the Northern Song (960-1127), Shalu Monastery in southeast Xigaze is the center of the Shalu Sect of Tibetan Buddhism. The architecture is a combination of Han and Tibetan elements. The monastery is in the possession of some treasures, including murals done during the Yan (1271-1368), ritual utensils, pattraleaf scriptures and a proclamation issued by Phags-pa, the 5th generation patriarch of the Sagya Sect.
